Summer Camp 2023 and SV-Five 2023-2024

Rising 9th – 10th Graders

CAMP

Dates: August 14-18, 2023

When you register for Sisters’ Voices Camp 2023 you will also register for the 2023-2024 year. It is possible to register for the year without registering for camp, but not possible to register for camp without registering for the year. Camp is definitely encouraged for both new and returning singers! It will help singers connect to each other and build musical skills that will be important for the coming year.

This week of Sisters’ Voices Camp will include rising 6th – 10th graders who will sing with Sisters’ Voices ensembles for the 2023-2024 season. These camps will help singers connect to each other and build musical skills that will be important for the coming year.

Skills are encountered and built through making music together, movement, playing games, working puzzles, and other activities. Camp weeks are full of fun, and they focus on building individual skills and knowledge, and on the singers getting to know each other better.

Singers will work on solfege with both Curwen handsigns and musical notation.

We’ll explore good vocal technique through a study of anatomy of breath and voice.

We’ll explore the ways singing is like a sport.

We’ll explore some great poetry and find ways to use elements of music (pitch, rhythm and meter, form, dynamics, articulation) to express the poems.

We’ll learn several pieces of music, focusing on learning to sing in parts and unaccompanied, building in details of expressiveness.

Each day will begin with a thorough warm-up that will include stretching, movement, and aural and vocal exercises.

There will be no public performance at the end of these camp weeks; it is a treasure that we have time together that is not pressured by the demands of producing a performance. Much of the repertoire that we study during camp will be performed at early performances during the year (if we are selected to perform at the Carrboro Music Festival, etc).

Sisters’ Voices Camp 2023 will take place in the Fellowship Hall and Room 15 at Binkley Church.

Full cost: $300 for the week

SV-FIVE ENSEMBLE

SV-Five is a new program in 2023-2024 for high school singers, and we invite new singers from the community to join us! Singers will meet in Full Ensemble weekly. Experienced and advanced singers will be placed into Chamber Ensemble. Singers who are new to SV will be placed in Skills Class until they gain the skills needed in rehearsals. Prospective singers in SV-Five are asked to communicate with Leandra; she will want to set up a meeting with the singer and to hear them sing, either in person or via a video recording.

Full Ensemble Rehearsal

– Saturday afternoons, 3:00-6:00
– With once or twice monthly social time and/or Leadership Workshops.
– Singers will be asked to submit a recording of themselves singing when they register, and/or to schedule a placement hearing with Leandra.
– Full year commitment
– Full cost: $1460.00/year

Skills Class

– Wednesdays, 7:00-8:00 or Saturdays prior to Full Ensemble Rehearsal
– Required of all singers who are new to Sisters’ Voices until singers demonstrate mastery of material needed for full rehearsals.
– Monthly commitment
– Full cost: $61.25/month

Chamber Ensemble

– Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30
– Singers may be placed into the Chamber Ensemble at their placement hearing.
– Singers in the Chamber Ensemble also sing in the Full Ensemble.
– Full year commitment
– Full cost: $730.00/year

Upon registration, all families will pay a non-refundable deposit equal to the first and last month’s tuition. Returning families may then choose to pay the remaining balance in full or to schedule monthly payments. New families will pay in monthly installments, as the Skills Class is a monthly commitment. If you choose pay in full, the remaining balance will be automatically drafted from your card on October 1st. If you choose to schedule monthly payments, your card will automatically be drafted on the first of the month from October through March.
