Skills by Ensemble

Below are lists of skills and qualities that singers have at the time they enter ensembles.

SV I (Dolce)
2nd & 3rd graders
no audition required
new singers admitted in March through September for the season beginning in September
– love of singing
– desire to sing with a group
– willingness to take direction
– ability, perhaps inconsistently, to match pitch, echoing another person
– ability, perhaps inconsistently, to sing along accurately with another person singing a known melody
– ability, perhaps inconsistently, to sing a song recognizably without accompaniment

SV II (Cantabile)
4th – 8th graders
auditioned required
new singers admitted in March through September for the season beginning in September
– love of singing
– desire to sing with a group
– willingness to take direction
– ability to consistently match pitch
– ability to consistently sing a song recognizably, though pitch and intonation may be inconsistent

SV III
4th – 8th graders
prior participation in an SV ensemble required
audition required
new singers admitted in September and January
This ensemble is part of SV II and also learns some of its own repertoire.
– ability to consistently sing a simple melody with accurate intonation and strength/sturdiness (not necessarily loudness)
– ability to sing a scale in sol fege, with hand signs, in tune and in canon with one other singer at the third
– ability to hold one’s own part in a simple canon: e.g. Row, Row, Row Your Boat; Grasshoppers Three; We Merry Minstrels; Now I Walk in Beauty; Rise Up O Flame
– demonstrated habit, during rehearsal, of sitting or standing with proper physical alignment, and mental and physical focus, when singing
– demonstrated consistent use of healthy and flexible vocal production
